Does texting on virgin mobile subtract minutes or charge money?

Im thinking of getting a virgin mobile phone and I am just wondering how texting works. As stated above, does it subtract from the minutes or charge cash? Also, how much minutes/money does it subtract per text? I am talking about the prepaid cards you buy at the store, not like a monthly plan or anything.

You can buy a unlimited texing plan for 15.00 a month.
